Medicover Genetics 2nd DNA Essay Competition

Medicover Genetics Cyprus is happy to announce that the DNA Essay Competition 2024, organized by the Marketing and Communications department, was completed successfully for a second year. The competition was open to high school students aged between 16-19 years old, with this year’s topic being ‘Family history is one of the most important risk factors for common genetic diseases. What is the role of DNA in the inheritance of such diseases?’

The scope of this initiative was to raise awareness about understanding the importance of DNA, how the information that lies in the DNA can cause inherited diseases to develop, and the significance of genetic testing and diagnosis. The participating students were given instructions on the format, style, language and content of the essay. Upon submission, the essays were anonymized, and evaluated by a group of four Medicover Genetics employees with expertise in the fields of genetics and communications. The marking criteria were based on the accuracy and validity of the information used, the knowledge and understanding of the topic, as well as the structure, presentation, vocabulary and grammar of the essay.

The results of the winning students were announced on April 25, 2024, as a way of celebrating World DNA Day. The students with the first and second place received a monetary sum, along with the opportunity to visit our state-of-the-art laboratories in Cyprus. Additionally, six other entries received honorable mentions, a testament to the exceptional work submitted this year, both in Greek and English language. All students received a diploma for their participation in the contest.

Medicover Genetics Cyprus would like to thank the Ministry of Education, Sport and Youth in Cyprus for continuing to endorse this competition, all participating students and their teachers who took time from their busy schedules and joined in the competition. As this year’s competition saw a significant interest in the submissions received, we hope that this initiative inspires young people to pursue a career in the STEM fields. We are beyond excited and grateful about the outreach our competition had and the excitement we received from students and educators alike, and we look forward to reading next year’s entries!
