Chromosomal microarray analysis (CMA)
Chromosomal microarray analysis (CMA) is a high-resolution genome-wide test for detecting chromosomal copy number changes, such as deletions and duplications, when an unbalanced chromosomal abnormality is suspected. CMA is an umbrella term that includes array-CGH and SNP-array based approaches. Array-CGH primarily detects copy number gains and losses, while SNP-array platforms may provide additional information such as regions of homozygosity or suspected uniparental disomy, depending on the platform and analysis. CMA provides higher resolution than conventional chromosome analysis, but it does not reliably detect balanced rearrangements, such as balanced translocations or low-level mosaicism.
