Postnatal genome-wide CNV analysis
Postnatal genome-wide CNV analysis is a sequencing-based diagnostic test for detecting copy number variations (CNVs) across the genome. The method uses low-coverage whole genome sequencing (lcWGS), a specialised form of WGS designed to identify chromosomal gains and losses from genome-wide read-depth data.
This approach is being introduced into routine postnatal CNV diagnostics and may replace chromosomal microarray or array CGH in many indications. Unlike array-based methods, lcWGS is not limited by predefined probe spacing. It provides an unbiased genome-wide signal, enabling detection of CNVs without probe-bound gaps. In many cases, CNV breakpoints can be delineated more precisely than with array CGH or chromosomal microarray.
The test detects unbalanced chromosomal imbalances, including deletions and duplications, as well as (partial) aneuploidies. It is particularly useful when such an alteration is suspected in patients with developmental delay, intellectual disability, autism spectrum disorder, congenital anomalies or syndromic features.
