Overview
Von Willebrand disease (VWD; also termed von-Willebrand-Jürgens syndrome) is an inherited bleeding disorder characterised by excessive mucocutaneous bleeding, including epistaxis, easy bruising, and menorrhagia. VWD is caused by germline pathogenic variants in VWF, which encodes von Willebrand factor (vWF) – a multimeric plasma glycoprotein that mediates platelet adhesion to the subendothelium at sites of vascular injury and protects circulating factor VIII from proteolytic degradation.
