Kidney agenesis / dysgenesis
Renal agenesis, in which the kidneys are completely or partially absent, and renal hypoplasia, in which the kidneys are underdeveloped, are rare disorders. Bilateral renal agenesis, characterised by absence of both kidneys, occurs with a frequency of approximately 1 in 10,000 births and is usually incompatible with life. Unilateral renal agenesis is often discovered incidentally, as it may be clinically inconspicuous. The distinction between renal hypoplasia, with a reduced number of nephrons, and renal dysplasia, with disorganised renal tissue, is usually made histologically. A possible cause includes pathogenic variants in various genes that play an important role in nephrogenesis.
