Hereditary diffuse gastric cancer
Hereditary diffuse gastric cancer (HDGC) is a hereditary form of cancer that accounts for 1-3% of all gastric cancers and is caused by loss-of-function mutations in the CDH1 gene, which codes for E-cadherin. Affected individuals develop the disease at an early age (average 38 years) and have an increased risk of cancer, with men having a 40-70% risk of gastric cancer and women a 60-80% risk, as well as a 40-50% risk of lobular breast cancer. In cases of confirmed HDGC, regular endoscopies and, if necessary, prophylactic gastrectomy are recommended, while blood relatives of CDH1 carriers can seek genetic counselling and testing.
