Pulmonary alveolar proteinosis
Synonyms: PAP
Overview
Pulmonary alveolar proteinosis (PAP) is characterised by surfactant accumulation within the alveoli, which impairs gas exchange and causes progressive dyspnoea. Severe disease may progress to hypoxaemic respiratory failure. In hereditary forms, surfactant accumulation results from genetic defects affecting surfactant homeostasis and clearance.
