Medicover Genetics 1st DNA Essay Competition

This past year, in an effort to raise awareness about the importance of DNA in modern clinical practice and precision medicine, Medicover Genetics Cyprus under the auspices of the Ministry of Education, held its first, annual DNA essay competition. The competition was open to high school students aged between 16–19 years old, with the essay topic being ‘How unfolding the DNA code can help precision medicine’.

The participating students were given instructions on the format, style, language, and content of the essay.

Upon submission, the essays were anonymized, and evaluated by a group of four Medicover Genetics employees with expertise in the fields of genetics and communications. The marking criteria were based on the accuracy and validity of the information used, the knowledge and understanding of the topic, as well as the structure, presentation, vocabulary, and grammar of the essay.

The students with the two highest-scoring essays were notified on April 25, 2023, as a way of commemorating World DNA Day. The students with the first and second place received a monetary sum, along with the opportunity to visit our state-of-the-art laboratories in Cyprus. Additionally, four other entries received honorable mentions, a testament to the excellent work submitted. All students received a diploma for their participation in the contest.

Medicover Genetics Cyprus would like to thank the Ministry of Education for endorsing this competition, all participating students and their teachers who took time from their busy schedules and participated in the competition. We are grateful for all the essays that we received, which were of a high standard and thought-provoking, and we take pride in knowing that the next generation is just as excited about science and promoting knowledge of genetics as we are. We are looking forward to next year’s entries!
